If you have been striving for a perfectly flat belly for years through diet and exercise but have not been able to achieve your goals, you may not be doing anything wrong. Sometimes, certain areas of the body are resistant to typical weight loss methods because the real problem is not fat. Instead, your skin and underlying tissues may actually be stretched out from other problems. For example, one or more pregnancies may have stretched out your abdominal skin, creating stretch marks and leaving behind skin that is drooping over your upper pelvis. Weight gain in the past may have translated into the same problem once you dropped the weight for good. Even past surgeries and certain diseases can leave the tummy appearing larger and saggier than you like. The answer to all of these problems may be the tummy tuck.
What is a Tummy Tuck?
This procedure may also be called an abdominoplasty because of the area that it treats. Specifically, this is a surgical procedure designed to reshape and resize the lower abdomen. It is useful for people who are at least close to their goal weights but who are unhappy with the excessive skin hanging from their bellies. With this treatment, you can achieve a smoother belly that also appears firm and that has the curves that you may have been missing for years. However, you should not choose this treatment in place of a necessary weight loss program. Although you may lose a bit of weight, it is mainly used to reshape your body.
What Happens During the Procedure?
Your tummy tuck will begin with anesthesia so that you stay comfortable. Depending on your surgeon’s preference, you will have either general anesthesia or IV sedation with local anesthesia. Once you are sedated, your surgeon will create two openings around the pubic area and the navel. Your abdominal muscles will be tightened and excess skin removed, whereafter the openings will be sealed. After the procedure you may need to wear a compression garment for a number of weeks as you recover. You can expect to return to work within one to three weeks, though it may be anywhere from six to eight weeks before you can return to your full range of usual activity.
