Almost everyone has heard of BOTOX®. In spite of its widespread notoriety, the treatment is still sometimes misunderstood by the general public. If you are dealing with dynamic wrinkles, this treatment may be exactly what you are looking for.
What is BOTOX®?
BOTOX® is a purified protein serum approved for cosmetic use by the Food and Drug Administration. The treatment is delivered via injection and works by reducing the activity of certain facial muscles. The product has a proven track record of safety spanning several decades. In addition to anti-aging applications, injections can be used to treat migraine headaches and hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating.
Is BOTOX® Like Facial Fillers?
Both products have anti-aging effects and are delivered via injection, but that is where the similarity ends. While fillers work by enhancing facial volume to minimize light lines and wrinkles, BOTOX® works by temporarily paralyzing facial muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles.
What are Dynamic Wrinkles?
Dynamic wrinkles are somewhat different from normal lines and wrinkles in that they are formed by underlying facial muscles that create certain facial expressions.
How Does BOTOX® Work?
BOTOX® works by temporarily paralyzing facial muscles that lead to the formation of dynamic wrinkles. It acts as a sort of nerve block to prevent nerve transmissions from traveling from the brain to the treated muscle. Since the treated muscle does not receive the message to contract, it will not form a dynamic wrinkle in that location.
What Areas are Treated by This Procedure?
BOTOX® is normally used to prevent wrinkles like those found on the forehead, between the eyebrows, crow’s feet, squint lines, and lines on the neck. It can also be used to treat other areas in off-label use. The treatment is not recommended for use around the mouth because this could lead to problems speaking or eating.
What About Results?
Patients typically begin noticing results days after their injections, but you may not notice complete effects until a few weeks after your initial set of injections. At this point you should see a significant minimization of the depth and size of treated dynamic wrinkles.
It is important to understand that the effects of the injections are not permanent. Eventually, the product will wear off, and facial muscle movement will begin to return. You can expect your results to last anywhere from three to six months. Patients typically begin noticing a slight return of muscle movement at about the three month mark. Complete muscle movement may not return for up to six months.
